Drinking enough water. Our bodies need water. Often times we fuel ourselves with our beloved caffeine, and while caffeine has some great purposes, our brains and body need water to stay hydrated and to function properly. One of the best things we can do for ourselves and also set us up for success and for a good start for the day, is drinking a glass of water first thing in the morning before we consume anything else, before we grab and reach for our coffee. Trust me, your body will thank you for this simple and easy step. Once we start to get into the habit of this, it’s like our body almost starts to crave this, to crave water because it is so good for us.
Trying to keep a consistent routine. This is important for so many reasons but our bodies and our brains crave consistency and crave structure. Having a regular sleep and wake schedule is good for our body and our brains. When our brains can think better and operate better, then we tend to feel better. Consistent routines is important for us because when we start going through rocky periods, this routine and structure can help us to try to stay on the path and can help give us a slight feeling of “normalcy” when life seems like it’s out of our control, and seems to feel completely unmanageable and out of control. When we sometimes go through depression, it can either look like sleeping too much or sleeping too little which can then throw our routine off balance. Just being able to get out of bed when you don’t feel like it or don’t have the energy to do it, is a win. It’s all about the small little steps. We use these small little steps as building blocks to build our stairway up. In the moment, we may not think that these small things make a difference, but they really do… they pave the road for us, they keep us on a path, a path towards improving our mental health and our overall wellbeing.
By starting out with a few small tips such as these, it can make it a bit easier to add to our already busy routine and schedules. Sometimes, it’s all about the small habits that can help improve our overall mood.
