Advocating For Your Health

When it comes to accessing healthcare in Saskatchewan and even Canada, we know it is lacking in several areas for both physical health care and mental health care services. Most individuals are not able to access care in a timely manner which often leads to further suffering and a further decline in one’s physical health but also one’s mental health and overall wellbeing.

According to the University of Saskatchewan College of Medicine and the CMHA, there are numerous barriers to accessing timely health care and numerous barriers to accessing follow up care such as surgeries and specialist appointments in a timely manner. Not being able to access the needed care in a timely manner can lead to further impacting one’s mental health. The U of S also reports that “mental illness costs the Canadian economy an estimated $33-50 billion per year in lost productivity” yet nothing is done to make changes or improvements.

What Can You Do For Yourself?

-Advocate for yourself as much as possible: Whether this be to your local MLA, patient advocate, healthcare provider or medical team. Your voice and your health matters.

-Practice good health care as much as possible: Focusing on areas of physical, mental, emotional and spiritual and things that can support you in these areas. Find things that bring you comfort and lean on your supports.

-Physically: try to eat healthy and nutritious meals as much as you can, drink enough water, get some exercise (it is important to move your body and fuel your body so that it can try to stay as healthy as much as possible).

-Mentally and emotionally: practice mindfulness, gratitude, grounding and self care. Practice things and rituals that make you feel good and bring about a sense of comfort.

-Try to find meaningful connection and supports including support groups
