Workplace Bullying, Harassment & Abuse

Have you experienced workplace bullying and harassment? If so, you are not alone. Many individuals have unfortunately experienced this. Workplace bullying and harassment can be found in various workplaces including businesses and large organizations and within the “systems”. Many of these large businesses and organizations have toxic management; managers and leaders who often exabit characteristics of narcissism, and most predominately within male leaders, but studies show that women are also becoming toxic managers as well. Often times, if you stand up for yourself or voice your concerns, you are made into a bigger target and they often will find a way to get you out or find ways to force you to quit, causing further damage to both your physical and mental health.

Workplace bullying and harassment is narcissistic abuse, and this can impact one’s physical health and can show up in the following ways:

Physically: headaches, fatigue, upset stomach, insomnia, body aches and pains, feeling restless and difficulty settling.

Mental & Emotionally: brain fog, anxiety, excessive worrying, low mood which can lead to depression, inability to think clearly, low self-esteem and confidence, feelings of hopelessness and helplessness, loss of interest in things, and can sometimes lead to suicidal thoughts.

Trying to navigate workplace bullying and harassment can be challenging and can feel both isolating and lonely.

Here Are a Few Things That May Help:

-Write everything down: keep good notes: time, date, place, people who were witnesses and the specifics of what happened. The more documentation the better.

-Only correspond with written communication: ask for everything in writing.

-Get knowledgeable about resources in your community.

-Know your rights: Contact the following agencies to find out what avenues you can explore: Saskatchewan Labour Relations Board, Saskatchewan Federation of Labour, Saskatchewan Human Rights Commission, Saskatchewan Occupational Health & Safety and the Ombudsman Saskatchewan. You can also try your local MLA too.

-Contact a lawyer that specializes in employment law (often unions are NOT there to help you as much as you think they are, so contact an outside lawyer to know all of your options and avenues to explore and get expert advice).

-Find supports and connect with others: Dealing with this type of thing can feel isolating and lonely trying to navigate and deal with this is a lot to handle and can feel overwhelming. Building connection and maintaining connection to others and supports is important for your wellbeing both physically and mentally and can help to feel less isolating.

Know that you are NOT alone. Unfortunately many individuals have experienced this, and it is important to talk about it and share your voice! Your MATTER and Your VOICE MATTERS!
